Jorge Mejias: On Creativity

Marianna

Do you have any habits you've built for yourself to foster creativity?

Jorge

Meditating inadvertently has really helped me out over the years when it comes to fostering creativity- Not that I’m great at it by any means but that time spent dedicated to removing myself from distractions has gone a long way.

Where do you think ideas come from?

Jorge

Absolutely everywhere - in a time where it feels as if there are few original ideas left and everything that rolls out is the culmination of previous ideas or the advancement of existing ones, keeping an open mind to surroundings and new experience will be what lets them flow through and cultivate eventually.

What does creativity mean to you?

Challenging what’s worked / been praised in the past.

When do your best ideas hit you?

Jorge

What sources of inspiration do you use to foster creativity in your work?

Jorge

Being so involved in the music realm I’m always trying to challenge myself to discover a new artist/song/genre I may be unfamiliar with - when I get into those deep rabbit holes of discovery where I’m finding the aforementioned usually leads to me doing a deep dive into their inspirations, creativity, and teams. Always get to walk away with a new (or refined) idea afterward, especially if I’m able to have a conversation with them.

Marianna

How would you describe your creative process?

Jorge

Traditional

How do you make sense of chaos in your life?

Jorge

Was actually asked this question fairly recently and realized that I haven’t figured out a healthy way to make sense of the “chaos” around me yet. The short answer is that aside from a few slip-ups I’m able to compartmentalize fairly well, at least during working hours. Long answer is that I try to focus on acknowledging whatever it is that is throwing me off balance and sitting with it until I feel that I can address it or move on from it. Whatever feels more appropriate.

Why do you think people get stuck on problems?

Jorge

Limitations- time, budget, and risk tolerance specifically.
